Courage for the Work
But now be strong, Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord, and work. For I am with you, declares the Lord Almighty.
Haggai 2:4 (NIV)
Zerubbabel, the high priest Joshua, and all the people had stalled the temple rebuilding. Opposition outside, weariness inside, and comparison with the former glory froze every hammer. Sixteen years of standstill. Then Haggai brought the missing word from heaven.
Three times the same order: be strong. To the governor, to the priest, to the people of the land. Nobody was excused from courage. God did not wait for feelings; He commanded courage and a return to work. Obedience resumes with tools in hand, not emotions in chest. Start moving and feelings follow.
The foundation of the restart was presence, not strength: for I am with you, declares the Lord Almighty. Heavenly armies sustain tired hands. Whoever works accompanied by God never works alone, even when the crew is small and supplies are thin. His company compensates every shortage.
Today, name the work you stalled: the habit, the ministry, the reconciliation, the project. Resume today with a single brick. Obedience delayed by weariness becomes disobedience disguised as wisdom. Begin small, but begin today and keep building tomorrow.
And work encouraged: promised presence sustains stalled works. Resume working today. Courage rebuilds temples.
