Grace, Mercy, and Peace
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
1 Timothy 1:2 (NIV)
Paul greets Timothy with three words forming a ladder: grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Notice that in pastoral letters he adds “mercy” — a word missing from other greetings. Pastors in difficult Ephesus needed something beyond grace and peace: mercy for their own failures. God knows the address and sends the exact remedy: grace for the unworthy, mercy for the fallen, peace for the troubled.
Faith receives in this order, skipping no rungs. First grace — unearned favor standing us up; then mercy — compassion lifting us when we fall again; finally peace — serenity of the twice-received. Young, timid Timothy, leading a complicated church, needed all three every morning. So do we: nobody shepherds, works, or parents on talent alone. Talent tires; threefold greeting sustains.
Receive all three before leaving today: grace to begin, mercy to restart, peace to continue. And hand all three to someone — a Timothy of yours needing exactly this. Grace, mercy, and peace: heaven's daily survival kit. Talent exhausts; grace renews every sunrise. Draw today's triple supply before spending anything. Heaven's kit never runs empty for asking hearts.
