Hearing Without Understanding

Be ever hearing, but never understanding.

Isaiah 6:9 (NIV)

Isaiah's commission sounds like mission impossible: go and tell this people — be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving. Preaching to those who will never grasp, sowing where nothing will sprout, speaking to shut ears. God warns up front: visible results will approach zero. Still he sends. Prophetic obedience is never measured by immediate fruit.

The sower's hope lives in a later promise: God's word never returns empty. Isaiah sowed into hard hearts, was sawn asunder by tradition — and centuries later Jesus and the apostles would quote his words hundreds of times. Seed seeming dead sprouted in future generations. Whoever sows weeping rarely harvests in the same chapter; they harvest in chapters they will never see.

Sow today even where none understand: speak Christ to the hardened relative, pray for the distant child, witness at the indifferent job. Never measure the Word by audience response — measure it by the Sower's faithfulness. Hearing without understanding today; understanding in tears tomorrow. God guarantees the harvest. Sowers weep, reapers sing — sometimes generations apart. Plant today what grandchildren will harvest. Faithful sowing never wastes a single seed.
