Grace Before the Request

· Topic: gratitude

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon 1:3 (NIV)

Paul greets Philemon with the inseparable pair: grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Gratitude shaped as greeting. Before asking anything, the apostle distributes the essential. Letters beginning with grace end in reconciliation. The envelope already preached before contents.

Order matters: grace first, peace after. Peace without grace is armistice; received grace births lasting peace. Philemon would need both to forgive Onesimus. Gratitude for grace enables difficult peace. Whoever knows how much they were forgiven forgives more easily with fewer speeches.

From God our Father: double fountain, Father and Son. Trinitarian gratitude in a simple greeting. Paul reminds his friend that every gift descends from above before circulating among brothers. Receiving from the Father to give to the brother is grace's circuit. Philemon would give Onesimus what he received from God.

Today, greet with true grace and peace. Not as cold formula but as conscious distribution. Carry grace to debtors, peace to irritants. Today's greeting may open tomorrow's reconciliation letter. Be heaven's mailman on earth's streets daily.

And greet gratefully: mouths full of grace pacify homes. Greet gratefully today. Grace-filled mouths pacify homes. Distribute peace daily.
