Who Can Hold Back?

If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking?

Job 4:2 (NIV)

Eliphaz opens with requested permission: if someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking? Words in times of pain carry purpose: to comfort or to wound. Every tongue before another's suffering chooses between balm and scalpel. Speaking is easy; healing by speaking is rare indeed.

The friend saw Job in ashes and could not bear silence. Hurry to explain outran patience to listen. How many Eliphazes crowd funerals and hospitals with hasty theologies! Presence needs no speech at times: a shoulder, a tea, a praying silence. Words have their hour; compassion holds priority over eloquence.

But there is another side: words withheld by fear become cowardice. Who can keep from speaking when truth must be said with love? Complicit silence before error is omission, never prudence. Discerning when to speak and when to stay quiet is wisdom only the Spirit distributes with precision and grace.

Today, examine your tongue around others' pain. Bring fewer answers and more ears. And when God sends you to speak, speak with surgical gentleness: truth that heals, never that bleeds. Ask for heaven's filter before opening your mouth on earth.

And weigh words: purposeful mouths heal, purposeless ones cut.
