Warming the King

· Topic: generosity

Let us look for a young virgin to attend the king and take care of him.

1 Kings 1:2 (NIV)

Old David shivered cold, servants proposing human solutions: finding girls to serve, tend, warm kings. Abishag the Shunammite warmed Israel's greatest king through simple presence. Dignified endings need basic care: warmth, company, presence. Serving elderly serves living history.

Generosity warms those grown cold in life. Elderly tremble from cold and loneliness — visits warm more than blankets. Abishag preached no sermons, merely stayed present; faithful presence outweighs distant speeches. Our “aged kings” — parents, grandparents, mentors — need Abishags: people showing up, staying, warming.

Warming one old king today: visiting, calling, hearing repeated stories patiently. Warming the king: generosity returning warmth to warmers.

Present people warm more than arguments. Showing up today for someone cold. Given warmth returns multiplied. Warm someone today, receive tomorrow. Lingering presences heal lonely hearts deeply. Linger today beside elderly saints. Repeated stories carry repeated wisdom. Listen patiently and learn humbly. Learn humbly from wrinkled teachers daily. White hair holds treasure maps. Explore others' memories respectfully. Honor slows time graciously always. Visit weekly. Warmed elders bless warmers eternally. Give heat and receive wisdom. Generational exchanges enrich both sides. Stay a while longer.

And honoring white hair: warmed today, blessing tomorrow with wisdom.
