In Quirinius's Days
This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.
Luke 2:2 (NIV)
Luke dates Christmas with historian precision: this was the first census while Quirinius governed Syria. Imperial decree, pagan governor, tax census — and amid bureaucracy, Mary in Bethlehem labor. God fulfilled Micah 5:2 through a Roman count: empires numbered heads, heaven numbered promises. Human politics serves, unknowing, eternal purposes.
Serving in Quirinius's days demands such vision. We labor under flawed governments, unjust firms, cold systems — while God keeps writing Bethlehems amid censuses. Relocating decrees may vehicle promises; irritating bureaucracy may path God's way. Servants await no perfect stages: serving faithfully under on-duty empires, knowing Quiriniuses pass and Kingdoms stay.
Serve where planted today: excellence in common work, faithfulness in flawed systems, hope amid hard decrees. In Quirinius's days, God was born — still being born where faithful servants await him.
Empires count; God fulfills. Serve faithfully, watching heaven work. Relocations serve promises more often than punishments. Bloom where transplanted today, trusting decrees to deliver destinies. Bureaucracies bow to prophecies eventually. Work excellently under flawed systems daily. Empires number heads; heaven numbers promises kept. Rest in that arithmetic today. Serve faithfully and watch fulfillment arrive on schedule. Faithful service outlasts flawed systems.
