Beauty Without Pride
Your heart became proud on account of your beauty.
Ezekiel 28:17 (NIV)
Ezekiel diagnoses Tyre's king precisely: your heart became proud on account of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. Beauty and wisdom — God's gifts — turned poison when hearts made them mirrors. The king fell not for ugliness or folly but for self-admiration. Pride is gratitude rotted: instead of “thank you, God,” it says “congratulations, me.”
Families must vaccinate children against this venom. Praising beauty and talent without pointing to the Source breeds little Tyres at home: children full of themselves, teens scorning others, adults wielding gifts as thrones. The antidote is simple and daily — “how lovely, thank God,” “how smart, use it serving,” “how gifted, remember the Giver.” Gifts celebrated gratefully never turn idols.
Review your mirrors today: what beauty or talent have you admired in yourself? Turn it grateful before it turns proud — thank, serve, share. Beauty without pride adorns; with pride, it topples even kings. Mirrors mislead; gratitude corrects vision. Convert every admiration into thanksgiving today: beauty, talent, success — all loans, none owned. Serve with your gifts instead of displaying them. Donors smile on stewards who share freely. Stay humble and remain beautiful in heaven's eyes.
