Shields of Gold

King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold.

2 Chronicles 9:15 (NIV)

The chronicler lists with goldsmith precision: King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold, pounds of gold in each. It was the kingdom's peak — wealth, peace, prestige. Gold shields hung in the House of the Forest of Lebanon told the world: none touches Israel. But the next story tells the rest: Solomon's son lost ten tribes, and the gold shields became Egypt's plunder. Gold secures no kingdom; only God does.

Faith matures when it trades gold shields for the shield of faith. Our modern shields wear other names: savings, health plans, influential contacts, flawless résumés. None of it is evil — Solomon never sinned by owning gold — but all of it falls short when trusted instead of held through God. The problem was never the gold; it was hanging the heart on it.

Review your shields today: what do you trust when night tightens? Thank God for resources — declaring your safety comes from him. Gold shields rust in history; the Lord our shield stands forever. Hang your heart in the right place. Audit your trusts regularly; markets crash but mercy never does. Gold belongs in temples, never on thrones of hearts.
