Only the Tablets in the Ark
There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb.
2 Chronicles 5:10 (NIV)
At the temple dedication feast, the chronicler notes a touching detail: there was nothing in the ark except the two tablets Moses had placed in it at Horeb — the covenant made with Israel after Egypt. No extra gold, no hoarded relics, no décor: only the tablets. At the heart of the most glorious temple ever built, God kept the simplest thing — his word written in stone. The essential needs no decoration.
Humility learns to carry only the tablets. We pile so much into the heart's ark — ancient grudges, titles, worries, vanities — that the Word runs out of room. Israel hauled through the desert a chest whose treasure was outwardly invisible and inwardly eternal. What defines you is not the ark's gold but the covenant inside: you are God's people because he brought you out of Egypt, not because you shine outside.
Empty your ark today: remove one grudge, one vanity, one worry — and confirm the tablets at the center. Read the Word slowly, obey one concrete point, rest in the covenant. Only the tablets in the ark sufficed for glory to fill the temple; they suffice to fill your life too.
