The Humble Inspection
You counted the buildings in Jerusalem and tore down houses to strengthen the wall.
Isaiah 22:10 (NIV)
Amid Jerusalem's siege, Isaiah describes the people's preparations: you counted the buildings in Jerusalem and tore down houses to strengthen the wall. In crisis they inspected — counted resources, demolished the expendable, reinforced the essential. Tearing down part of your own house to save the city takes rare discernment: not everything we build deserves to stand. Sometimes strengthening requires demolishing.
Humility runs this inspection on the soul. We count our habits, commitments, and attachments — discovering fragile constructions squatting where walls should stand: pride disguised as principle, schedules crowded with vanity, relationships that drain. Demolition hurts, but a weak wall on siege day is worse. The prophet records the fact without judging the method; the lesson is honest assessment before crisis assesses us.
Count your houses today: what must come down for the essential to stand strong? A habit, a bill, a hoarded hurt, an occupation stealing the altar. Demolishing with God is building: every fallen surplus wall frees stone for the wall that matters. Humble inspection today prevents ruin tomorrow. What gets inspected gets strengthened. Invite God into every room, including locked ones. Demolition with him always builds something better.
