The Complaint God Hears

Job had lost nearly everything and, instead of rehearsing pious answers, did something brave: he gave free rein to his complaint and spoke out of the bitterness of his soul. He brought to God exactly what he carried inside — disgust with life, questions with no answers, the sense of being treated unfairly. And God did not rebuke him for it; he listened to the end and then answered.

There is a faith that pretends and a faith that trusts — and only the second has the courage to weep before God. Pretending everything is fine when your heart is in pieces is not spirituality; it is theater. Job teaches us that God's love is too great to be frightened by our honesty: because God is love, he prefers our sincere complaint to our rehearsed smile.

If your soul is bitter today, do not run from God because of the pain — run to God with the pain. Tell him, in your own words, what hurts, what confuses, what outrages you. A complaint carried to God becomes prayer; pain hidden from God becomes a wall. He listens, he understands, and in due time, he answers.
