A Heart With No Hiding Places
The pride of your heart has deceived you.
Obadiah 1:3 (NIV)
Obadiah's message against Edom opens with a surgical diagnosis: the pride of your heart has deceived you. Edom lived in the clefts of the rocks, in a home on the heights, and mistook altitude for security: “Who can bring me down to the ground?” Geography became theology — I am on top, so I must be right — and pride did what it always does: it isolated.
Pride is the great saboteur of relationships because it builds its home up high: from the heights you judge, from the heights you look down, from the heights you never need anyone. Whoever lives on the heights may still love — but loves from a distance, without getting involved, without confessing weakness. And love from a distance heals no one up close.
The antidote is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less: coming down from the rock, admitting “I was wrong,” asking for help, hearing a correction without getting defensive. Healthy relationships are born on the ground floor of honesty, where two hearts with no hiding places can truly meet. Come down one step today: instead of impressing someone, confess something; instead of competing, celebrate. Humble hearts keep their doors open — and open doors become homes.
