The Shepherd Who Leads Us Home
Save your people and bless your inheritance; be their shepherd and carry them forever.
Psalms 28:9 (NIV)
Some days praying feels like talking to a wall. David knew that feeling well, and he opened Psalm 28 with it: “To you I call, O Lord my Rock; do not turn a deaf ear to me.” Notice his honesty: he neither pretends everything is fine nor gives up crying out. He carries the silence into prayer instead of letting the silence pull him out of prayer. And that is where the psalm turns: the same David who began begging to be heard ends by declaring he has been heard, because the Lord is the strength of his people.
The end of the psalm keeps its most beautiful image for your relationships: God cares for his people like a shepherd and carries them forever. He does not merely answer cries; he leads people. And whoever has been led learns to lead: listening to a friend's outpouring without rushing, standing beside someone in silence, loving through concrete gestures. Jesus set the measure of that love when he commanded us to love one another as he loved us.
Today, if you feel invisible in the crowd, do what David did: cry out. Then look around — someone near you may need exactly the care you wish to receive.
