Pardon for the Sorrowful
If anyone has caused grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some extent — not to put it too severely.
2 Corinthians 2:5 (NIV)
Paul handles the repentant disciplined: if anyone caused grief, he caused it not only to me but in part to all, not to be too severe. Love measuring grief without exaggerating. Discipline without excess protects the fallen and the church. Measured pain restores; inflated pain crushes. Scales calibrated by grace.
In part, not too severely: love refuses generalizing faults. One man's error grieved all partly, never wholly. Paul distributes weight relieving defendants. Love never paints others' sadness thick. Whoever loves quantifies mercifully subtracting hopefully. Precision with compassion heals faster than severity.
The letter proceeds ordering pardon and comfort, lest excessive sorrow swallow him. Love pardons after disciplining. Punishment without pardon becomes revenge; discipline with pardon becomes medicine. Churches only excluding forget including back. Restoration completes cycles correction began.
Today, pardon the sorrowful: someone already wept enough over errors. Confirm your love instead of renewing sentences. And if you are the sorrowful, receive pardon: excessive sorrow never comes from God. Rise pardoned returning to tables. Pardoning love heals both sides.
And pardon restoring: pardoned sorrows become testimonies. Pardon restoring today. Pardoned sorrows testify. Comfort the fallen. Restore gently. Heal both sides. Love restores. Forgive fully.
