Faith Without Favoritism
My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism.
James 2:1 (NIV)
James forbids with apostolic clarity: believers in our glorious Lord Jesus show no favoritism among people. Favoritism is faith with a social filter. The same gospel that equalized us at the cross cannot separate us at the door. Grace received freely admits no golden turnstile.
The example embarrasses: in walks the rich man with ring and fine clothes, in walks the poor man in shabby clothes. One gains the noble seat, the other gains the floor. James calls this judging with evil thoughts. Faith's purpose is reflecting the Father who shows no partiality, not the club that screens members. Sanctuaries are no elite showrooms.
The theology runs deep: God chose the poor to be rich in faith. Despising whom God honored means disagreeing with God in public. Every scornful glance in the assembly votes against heaven's counsel. Treating the small well means treating well the portrait God loves painting most.
Today, examine your seats: whom do you serve first? Who gets your widest smile? Break the world's protocol with the kingdom's: honor the invisible, sit with the forgotten, learn the unlikely one's name. Your faith will be measured at the entrance door.
And receive everyone: tables without favoritism reveal a Father without partiality.
