Listening to the Elderly
Is not wisdom found among the aged?
Job 12:12 (NIV)
Job, needling friends who fancied themselves wise, asks: is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding? The expected answer was “yes” — but surrounding “elders” spoke authoritative foolishness. Age without God ages opinions; age with God matures wisdom. Job exposes the paradox: not every elder is wise, yet all true wisdom honors God-walking elders.
Serving includes hearing the old. Churches and families despising elders lose living libraries: provision stories, error lessons, prayers sustaining generations. Hearing never means obeying everything — it means honoring, filtering through Scripture, retaining gold. Hurried youth call this wasted time; God calls it commandment with promise.
Hear one elder today: visiting, asking, noting. What provision did they witness? Which error would they avoid? What verse sustained them? Listening to the elderly: hearing servants inherit wisdom sans its price.
White hair crowns or burdens — depending on listeners. Listen today. Living libraries sit in rocking chairs nearby. Visit one elder today, asking two questions and noting answers. Request prayers, receive stories, give thanks. Inherited wisdom prevents future falls cheaply. Honor white hair and harvest understanding. Listen well today and lead wisely tomorrow.
