To Beloved Gaius
To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
3 John 1:1 (NIV)
The letter opens with grandfatherly tenderness: the elder, to my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth. John, love's apostle, now old, calls a son in faith “dear” — adding: in the truth. No empty affection but truth-tested love. Gaius walked in truth, hosted missionaries, funded the work; the old apostle loved him for that and for himself. Apostolic love is personal and doctrinal at once.
Faith families are born of such love. Paul had Timothy and Titus; John had Gaius; Barnabas had Mark. The Gospel advances heart to heart, not merely pulpit to crowd. Every mature believer needs a Gaius — someone younger to love, shape, and celebrate. And every Gaius needs an elder — someone older loving in truth, correcting tenderly, applauding growth.
Write your verse one for someone today: a message calling a son in faith dear, thanks to whoever formed you, an invitation to walk together. To beloved Gaius: two words sustaining entire ministries from true hearts.
Love in truth: neither truthless flattery nor loveless truth. John nailed the measure — imitate him. True hearts sustain whole ministries quietly. Write your verse one for someone today.
