How Long, O Lord?
How long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen?
Habakkuk 1:2 (NIV)
Habakkuk opens his book bluntly: how long, O Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out “Violence!” but you do not save? The prophet saw street injustice and heaven's silence — daring to join both in one question. That is not faithlessness; it is faith speaking loudly. Whoever disbelieved would have left already; whoever believes protests. Asking “how long” proves you still expect an answer.
God never rebuked the question — he answered it, in ways Habakkuk never imagined. The Lord listened all along; he simply worked on a scale the prophet could not see. It is nearly always so: God's silence is not absence but construction in progress. He answers on timing that produces faith, not timing that quiets anxiety. Prophets are born between cry and answer.
Carry your “how long” into prayer today instead of grumbling. Name the violence aching you, the overdue rescue, the missing answer — and hand God the clock. Questioning faith remains faith; and the Lord who heard Habakkuk hears you too. Honest questions keep conversations alive with God. Silence born of protest still counts as prayer. Keep asking until heaven answers.
