Mercy Without Merit

I will have mercy on whom I have mercy.

Romans 9:15 (NIV)

Paul quotes God's words to Moses: I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion. At first glance it sounds arbitrary; in truth it is freedom. If mercy depended on merit, no one would receive it — not me, not you. God does not distribute compassion by points; he pours it out because of who he is. Mercy that must be earned is not called mercy; it is called wages.

This truth humbles and frees at once. It humbles because it takes control from our hands: we do not decide whom God forgives. It frees because it lifts the weight from our shoulders: we need not earn what we already received. And it overflows into relationships: if I received mercy without deserving it, how can I deny it to whoever offended me? The forgiveness we give is always smaller than the forgiveness we got.

Choose today someone who “doesn't deserve” your compassion — and give it anyway. Call, forgive, help, pray. The mercy you received free was made to circulate. Whoever grasps Romans 9:15 stops calculating merit and starts distributing grace.
