The righteous will live by his faith.

Habakkuk 2:4 (NIV)

Facing Chaldean violence, God answers Habakkuk with the contrast spanning the whole Bible: see, he is puffed up — but the righteous will live by his faith. On one side the swollen soul trusting itself; on the other the righteous trusting God. Paul would quote this line three times; Luther would read it and the Reformation would be born. Five Hebrew words carry the entire Gospel: live, by, faith.

Faith here means fidelity in motion — “his faith” says the text. No Sunday feeling but a Monday posture: staying righteous while the wicked prosper, praying while heaven stays silent, staying honest when cheating pays. The righteous live by faith because they breathe trust: each day inhaling promise, each night exhaling surrender. Faith-living is the only lifestyle judgment cannot topple.

Choose the verse's side today: deflate the swollen chest and fill it with trust. When accounts won't balance, live by faith; when diagnoses frighten, live by faith; when the wicked laugh, live by faith. The righteous live not by the visible — which is why they stand when the visible collapses. Faith outlives every forecast. Breathe promise daily and stand unshaken.
