Sleeping in Peace
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalms 4:8 (NIV)
Psalm 4 ends with one of Scripture's serenest statements: I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. David wrote it surrounded by enemies, slander, and betrayal — not on a quiet retreat. His peace came not from circumstances but from company: sleeping in peace is possible when we know who keeps watch. God never sleeps so that we can.
How many of us carry relationships to bed? The unresolved argument, the rehearsed hurt, the message that never arrives — and the mind replays everything in the dark. Scripture advises against letting the sun set on anger, and David shows the way: handing the night to God before handing the body to sleep. Praying before bed is no ritual; it is a changing of the guard — and he takes the watch.
Make peace before the pillow today: forgive, call, resolve, surrender. Turn your bedroom into a territory of peace, free of accusing screens and looping thoughts. Lie down in peace — and fall asleep quickly. The Lord stands guard, and his guard never dozes. Hand him tonight's watch and collect tomorrow's renewed mercies. Peace is a Person before it is a feeling.
